Washer Won't Spin? Causes and Fixes (Utah)
Last checked: October 25, 2026
If the washer fills and agitates but will not spin, start with the easy causes: an unbalanced load or water that is not draining. Many washers will not spin until the water is out. After that, the usual suspects are the lid switch or door lock, the drive belt, or the motor coupling.
Likely causes
- Unbalanced or overloaded drum (washer stops spin to protect itself)
- Water not draining, which blocks the spin cycle (see washer not draining)
- Lid switch or door lock not detecting closed
- Worn or broken drive belt
- Broken motor coupling or worn clutch (some top-loaders)
- Control board or motor problem
Safe DIY checks
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before touching anything inside, and shut off the water or gas supply where it applies. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Redistribute the load. Big single items like a bath rug or comforter are a common cause.
- Run a drain and spin-only cycle with an empty drum.
- Make sure the drum is fully drained. If not, clean the pump filter and check the drain hose.
- Close the lid or door firmly and listen for the lock click.
- Look up your model's error code in the manual if one shows.
When to call a pro
- It will not spin even empty and drained
- You hear grinding, a burning smell, or the motor hums without turning
- The lid lock clicks but nothing happens
- An error code keeps coming back
Typical repair cost in Utah
Call for a quote. Costs depend on the brand, the part and the shop, so ask for a written quote after diagnosis. Most Utah shops charge a diagnostic or trip fee, and many credit it toward the repair.
Repair or replace?
Lid switches, door locks and belts are usually worth fixing. A failed motor, transmission or control board on an older washer can cost enough that replacing makes sense. Read the repair or replace guide.

FAQ
Why does my washer not spin?
Unbalanced loads and drain problems are most common. After that, check the lid switch or door lock, drive belt and motor coupling.
Will a washer spin with water in it?
Most washers drain first and then spin. If water stays in the drum, fix the drain problem first.
Is it safe to keep running it?
Running a washer that hums but will not spin can damage the motor. Stop and diagnose it.
