Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry? Fixes for Utah Homes
Last checked: October 25, 2026
When a dryer takes two or three cycles, the vent is the first thing to check. Hot, wet air has to leave the house. If lint, a crushed hose or a stuck vent flap holds it in, clothes stay damp and the dryer runs hot. Blocked vents are also a fire risk.
Likely causes
- Clogged or crushed vent hose, or a long vent run full of lint
- Stuck or blocked outside vent flap
- Lint screen clogged, including residue from dryer sheets
- Overloaded drum or clothes not spun well by the washer
- Dirty moisture sensor bars ending cycles early
- Weak heating element, igniter or thermostat
Safe DIY checks
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before touching anything inside, and shut off the water or gas supply where it applies. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- Clean the lint screen. If water beads on it, wash it with warm soapy water to remove dryer-sheet film.
- Pull the dryer out and straighten or replace crushed foil or vinyl hose. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is recommended.
- Go outside while it runs and check the vent flap opens with strong airflow.
- Wipe the metal sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol.
- Dry smaller loads and make sure the washer spin cycle works.
- Have the full vent run cleaned if it has not been done in a year or more.
When to call a pro
- The vent is clear and airflow is strong, but it is still slow
- The dryer or the vent hose gets very hot to the touch
- You smell burning
- The vent runs through a wall, attic or roof you cannot reach
Typical repair cost in Utah
Call for a quote. Costs depend on the brand, the part and the shop, so ask for a written quote after diagnosis. Most Utah shops charge a diagnostic or trip fee, and many credit it toward the repair.
Repair or replace?
Usually this is a cleaning job, not a reason to replace. If a heating part has failed, it is normally an affordable repair. Read the repair or replace guide.

FAQ
Why does my dryer take so long to dry clothes?
A clogged or crushed vent is the most common cause. Overloading, a dirty lint screen, dirty moisture sensors or a weak heating part can also slow drying.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Clean the lint screen every load. Many fire safety groups recommend cleaning the vent at least once a year, more often for long vent runs or heavy use.
Is a slow dryer dangerous?
It can be. Trapped lint and heat raise fire risk, so clear the vent soon.
